Kitsilano Showboat – 87 Years of Great Memories
The COVID-19 pandemic reminded me of what happened in the 1930s during the great depression. Patrons couldn’t afford to buy tickets to theatres, theatres couldn’t afford to hire the acts and the talent had no place to showcase their skills. Today with the COVID-19 pandemic patrons couldn’t go to the theaters because of social distancing, therefore theatres couldn’t afford to stay open. As a result there was no money to hire performers.
After two years of little to no income and then the devastating flood that destroyed our sound system many of our local supporters stepped forward to help us financially to recover. Chief amongst them was Mr. Peter Wall who financed the purchase of a new sound system. Without Mr. Walls generous donation we were faced with the possibility of cancelling this years season. Ohers donors included Yoshi Yamamoto (Wailele Wai Wai), Marji Wallace (Spirit of the South Seas), Dana Kinghorn (Bela Domingo Polynesian Dancers), Bright Sunset Chinese Dance Troupe, Mary McIwaine (Heart & Sole) Janice Benna (Hourglass Cabaret) and Deb Brodie.
Thanks to them we will again be able to put together a season of great entertainment that will put a smile on everyone’s face. I think Vancouver really needs it.
Please mark your calendars for our Showboat fundraisers with Richard Lowly and Friends and Hamilton Street Swing. They promise to be two exciting nights of entertainment so please come out and support your very own Kitsilano Showboat.
As in 1935 to today, everyone associated with Showboat is a volunteer; nobody gets paid. All donations received including the fundraisers goes directly to bringing you free entertainment. If you see any of our volunteers on the street please take a moment to thank them for their contribution to your community.
If you would like to be part of our family in supporting the Kitsilano Showboat please give me a call.
